Healthy Eating Versus A Diet

MSNBC is reporting that Americans are trying to eat more "healthfully" rather than dieting.

According to New York-based NPD Group Inc., 29% of women and 19 % of men are on diets. These findings are based on the responses of 26,000 American adults, compared to 10 years ago when 35 percent of women and 23 percent of men said they were dieting,

People are tired of feeling deprived and disappointed from diets.

68 % are dieting to improve overall health. The researchers found that the most popular diet was one dieters made up for themselves. -1/3rd of the dieters in NPD's surveys said they had formulated their own approach. Their approach usually meant portion control.

9% of those surveyed made dramatic calorie reductions or eliminated a food group such as carbohydrates.

60 percent of adults' want to lose 20 pounds.
Eight out of 10 dieters said their goal was both to lose weight and improve their health . Scientists say this is a sign of growing acceptance that a healthy weight may not equate to slimness.
